“the flood” 8″x10″ acrylic on canvas, 2016

A lover of art from the moment she could hold something in her hands, Red FitzGerald has spent her life using creation as a means of navigating the tumultuous world around her. Surviving childhood violence, neglect, and later, domestic abuse, Red’s work often delves into themes of trauma and isolation. She paints with vivid color and dynamic landscapes, reflecting the lessons she’s learned while healing from these lifelong challenges.

Though Red spent years feeling unsure of her place in the art world—wondering if her paintings were meant to be shared or simply found later on—she has now embraced the power of connection. Despite the isolation that marked her journey, she has come to realize that others may share in the stories her work tells. These paintings are a testament to strength, resilience, and the reminder that even in darkness, one can create their own light. Through this work, Red hopes to show that while we may face our battles alone, we are never truly alone in our experiences, and invites the viewer to embrace this duality in their own lives.
